Farrington’s Gates Millennium Scholar Going to Yale University
![]() |
Congratulations to Timothy Nguyen Le for winning the prestigious 2009 Gates Millennium Scholarship! Gates Scholars are distinguished individuals who display “strong leadership, community service and academic achievements.” Tim is one of two students from Hawaii and the only 2009 recipient from a Hawaii public school. Tim also received a $20,000 scholarship from the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation as a “2009 Dell Scholar” – he is the only winner from Hawaii this year. In addition, he is a recipient of the $5,000 Karen Uno Outstanding Student Award from the Mamoru and Aiko Takitani Foundation. Tim will be attending Yale University, where he plans on majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Pre-Medicine. He plans to pursue a career in Medicine. |
The GMS Award Provides:
- Support for the cost of education by covering un-met needs and self-help.
- Renewable awards for Gates Millennium Scholars maintaining satisfactory academic progress.
- Graduate school funding for continuing Gates Millennium Scholars in the areas of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science.
- Leadership development programs with distinctive personal, academic and professional growth opportunities.
Farrington’s Jorge Portillo Awarded Full Ride Scholarship
![]() |
Jorge Portillo, a student from Farrington's Hale Kulia, was awarded the Teaching Forward Scholarship. This is a full-tuition undergraduate scholarship to the University of Phoenix. This scholarship was given to all the 2009 State Teachers of the Year. Hawaii 2009 Teacher of the Year - Bebi Davis awarded this scholarship to Jorge Portillo, because he is a true success story. Jorge is a student who struggled, but never gave up. He has always challenged himself and today he is the lead programmer for the Farrington Robotics Team. Most of all, he extended his help to Dole Middle School's Robotics Team and helped them with programming. Jorge will pursue a degree in Computer Science. |
Farrington's Minh Trang Nguyen Awarded the 2009 Executive Women International Scholarship
![]() |
Congratulations to Minh Trang Nguyen, a junior at Farrington High School. Minh was honored with a $5,000 Scholarship from Hawaii's Executive Women International Committee.
The scholarship is open to all high school juniors in public, private and parochial schools. Students must use their award toward earning a four-year degree at an accredited college or university. (Students may attend a two-year accredited college, but only as the initial step in the pursuit of a four-year degree). Students are judged on their application materials, oral and written communication skills, creativity, scholastic records, involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership qualities, awards and honors, citizenship, attitude and clearly defined career goals. Minh is maintaining a GPA of 4.0 while she takes on the challenge of Calculus II at Honolulu Community College. In Fall 2009, Minh will be tackling Calculus III at Kapiolani Community College. |

Hi Minh,
Thanks for the response… as a proud alumnus, I am so pleased and excited to see students like you, Tim, Jorge, Travis and everyone from the Class of '09 who have worked so hard to earn a record number of scholarships.
IIRC, the Class of '09 also set a school record for the dollar amount of scholarships earned in an academic year - over $3.4 million! Now that's something all students, teachers and alumni can really be proud of!
As the FHSMAA President put it in one of her articles here on our site, “Farrington seems to always get a ‘bum rap’ from people who don't know what it's like within our school.” It's students like you, the wonderful teachers & staff members and generous support from alumni who rise above the occasion that make FHS a great place to learn!
One will never know the true meaning of being a Gov unless you are Farrington alumni or have spent a considerable amount of time as a member of the Farrington Ohana, learning to live “The Farrington Way”. That's what makes a Farringtonian so special!
