The Culinary Arts Academy is a two-year program aimed at preparing students for post-secondary studies in a career in culinary arts. Through field trips, weekly class projects, mentoring, and work-study, students are able to gain the knowledge and understanding needed to determine their career interests.

Students in the program have the opportunity to help with catering projects, participate in community service activities and volunteer to feed the homeless through a non-profit organization. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in work-study, where they work on professional catering projects and gain experience in a career of interest, conduct research and complete a senior project. Throughout the year the culinary program hosts luncheons when the FHS staff can enjoy an elegant mid-day meal prepared and served by the culinary students.

The culinary program enjoys a collaborative partnership with various elementary schools within the Kalihi district. During the school year, classes come to the high school to prepare and, of course, eat the treats made with the help of the high school students enrolled in the program. Students also serve the community through volunteer catering projects with programs such as River of Life and the Domestic Violence Coalition.

Partnerships include Kapiolani Community College and Maui Community College. Throughout the year, the program has a diverse array of guest speakers who visit the high school to provide students with information about their specialties and careers. These include a pastry chef, sushi chef, banquet manager and the culinary division of branches of the US military.

Students will complete a personal statement and college application. Also, through hands-on experiences and integrated projects that involve the food service and English classes, students will develop the skills necessary to enter the work force, find further training or go on to college upon graduation.
